DIY Derby Hat, Navy Clutch, quilted clutch, Statement Necklace, Summer Tunic, Thrift Store Fashion, tunic over shorts

DSC00070DSC00073DSC00071DSC00088

Saturday was the Ketucky Derby and we were invited to a Derby Party — the whole family had a blast!  The invitation said hats required, like I need an excuse to wear a hat.:)

I whipped up one for me and one for G the morning of the party using a hat we already had and a Thrift Store find ($4.99), a wide ivory grosgrain ribbon that I found in my stash of ribbons, blush pink silk roses I bought at The Christmas Tree Store for $10.00 and a hot glue gun.

The outfit was inspired by OP.  I love the idea of layering a shorter dress or tunic with a pair of shorts that just peek out from underneath.  I bought the navy and ivory Paper Crane tunic, along with 3 other dresses (to be revealed soon) at Marshall’s.  Each was $19.99.  The navy shorts (you can barely see them, but they’re there) are J.Crew 4″ Chino Short.  I only go with 4″.  I don’t know why but they are the perfect length for me.  The belt and watch are from Target, the sandals are Nine West (TJ Maxx), the purse is a Thrift Store Find from last year (also seen here), necklace is from my ridiculous JCPenney jewelry buy last fall (also seen here).

DSC05376 - Copy

This has been one of my favorite outfits this spring.  I bought the top at JC Penneys on clearance for $15.00.  It’s made by Alyx and they call it a bubble top because it has a loose elastic bottom which makes it poof perfectly.  The bell sleeves have lattice trim adding interest to an otherwise plain white top.  This top will get me from spring and through summer easily.  I see jean shorts and sandals. These jeans are GAP 1969 (also seen here and here) and quite old at this point — 3 years maybe (similar here).  The boots are Ivanka Trump (also seen here) and I have worn the heck out of them, and love that they go all the way to my knees.  The belt is the Thrift Store Find.  I can’t remember how much it cost, but if it was more than $5 I would be very surprised.  It is totally unique, which is why I browse thrift stores all the time.  Sunglasses are RayBan 55 mm Aviators gold matte with brown lenses.

casual outfit, Faux Leather Leggings, Over the Knee Suede Boots, Plaid, Red Buffalo Plaid, Target

The star of this outfit is the buffalo plaid jacket, without question.  It is a Thrift Store find.  I bought it for $12.99, a complete steal.  I love it and have worn it often this winter and now into the spring.  This day I wore it over a monochromatic combo of black and charcoal grey.  The faux leather leggings are from Target.   I wasn’t sure about them at first, but under a long tunic top — I they look great!  The sweater vest is sooo old.  A TJ Maxx find from long ago (also seen here) and the boots were my fave footwear purchase of last year (seen here and here) inspired by the one and only OP.  Hat and gloves are from my local supermarket–believe it or not.   Happy Friday!

black loafers, casual outfit, Fall Outfit, J.Crew Striped Painter's tee, Loafers, Plaid Jacket, Trumpet Skirt

DSC00203DSC00208DSC00211DSC00219DSC00216

I’ve told you that I have many outfits to post, this is one from back in December.  This flirty skirt is a Target Clearance item.  What I love about it for me, is the flat smooth top of the skirt which emphasizes my smaller waist and the trumpet lower part that camouflages my less than impressive upper thighs.  The material is a casual almost sweatshirt fabric and I just thought it was cute.  I wore it with my fav navy striped shirt from J.Crew (seen here and here), black tights and loafers that are from my sales rep days when I walked on college campuses all day long and needed sensible shoes to make it bearable.  The truth is I like these loafers and feel like they have made a comeback.  The jacket is a thrift store find.  I think it’s adorable.  Cropped and plaid made it a great addition to my jacket collection (which is really quite large).  It’s Tommy Hilfiger and although I’m not sure what it cost me — I did find it in the kids section (but it’s not kids) so I can’t imagine it cost me more than $10. Just recently I saw these pictures (here and here) of OP and thought there was some inspiration there that I hadn’t even realized.

DSC03597Wide legged denim is coming back. I saw this pic of Olivia Palermo and found inspiration.

While I don’t own any actual bell bottoms, I’ve got lots of wide legged/boot cuts that really resemble a bell bottom.  These are a pair that have never left my closet (also seen here with the same faux suede boots).  They are more of trouser pant.  They are GAP and of course they are really old — About 10 years.  The sleeveless sweater wrap is also old (also seen here), TJ Maxx.  T was in preschool, so 4 years ago at least.  Short sleeved T-neck is Target this past fall (also seen here).  If they have them again in 2015, I recommend getting one or 2.  The neck is snug but not too tight and oooohhh so soft.  The coat is Nine West (also seen here).  The clutch was a find!  I found it in a Savers store for $4.00.  It’s fabric quilted Navy (I’ve already explained my current obsession with Navy in my last outfit post) and it has a long chain strap, so I can wear it cross-body, or double it up and make it a shoulder strap.  But mostly I use it as a large clutch.  I’m finding a lot of bags that I am making into clutches.  I should do a post on that. 🙂  And I just did a major watch buy at Target.  They were $10 a piece.  I couldn’t resist.  Military style accessories are in this Spring.  It’s a men’s watch so I had to make some modifications so it would fit.  Nothing a pair of scissors and super glue can’t handle.

Blanket Scarf, colored cords, Dolman sleeve Tee, lands end coat, Over the Knee Suede Boots, Quilted Coat, white work shirt outfits

DSC03128 DSC03130  DSC03132 DSC03134OMG, this was one of the busiest days I’ve had in a long time (as far as kids’ activities go).  2 hockey games in the morning, then another 3 at the Arena downtown, then out to dinner with family and friends and back downtown for the Sabres game.  Whew.  One outfit had to do it all…keep me warm, but also not too warm.  Layers of course.  I struggled putting this one together, knowing what the day was going to be like and not knowing how cold it was going to get, I wanted to be prepared. I hate being cold.  Looking at the pics now, I don’t love every aspect of this outfit as I did on that day.  But that is all part it, isn’t it?  Hit or miss?

Marsala is the color of the year, that’s just burgundy, right?  Well, that’s what I’m going with.  I have a couple of pairs of colored cords and they are such an easy way to add color to your wardrobe.  These are from Banana Republic (maybe 2 years ago).  The shirt layering is combo of a long white dress shirt, I bought just after I had T.  It came with a belt (shocking, I know) and I loved it because it hid all of my extra, post baby curves.  The sleeves are 3/4  and roll to short, but here I just left them rolled down and they perfectly matched the length of the striped dolman sleeve tee (also seen here) that is TJMaxx (2010). It’s a boatneck too, which I love.  I have a matching fabric belt for the tee, but I thought something more structured was a better fit (belt is seen here and here).  The next layer was an open front Cardigan (Kohl’s) from a few years back. And I topped it all off with my Lands End coat (seen here and here) and a trendy blanket scarf fro AE (seen here).

A special thanks to my photographer, Gigi.  My girl is too cute, we had a good laugh trying to get a decent picture.

White Shirt / old (similar here and here), Dolman Tee / old (can’t find anything similar), Belt / old, Corduroys / old / Banana Republic (similar here at GAP), Cardigan / old, Coat / Lands End Kids (thrift store find), Scarf / American Eagle (no longer available online, but try stores), Boots / Chinese Laundry

Blanket Scarf, Denim Dress, Over the Knee Suede Boots, Plaid Blazer, Thrift Store Fashion, Winter Layers

DSC03084DSC03079

I can read your mind.  More Plaid?  YES!  and this is not the end of it either! This blazer was a fabulous thrift store find.  I could not resist.  I thought it would be great with lots of things and for the price if I wore it twice, I’d be happy.  I also thought I’d wear it sometime over the holidays but that didn’t happen so I am debuting it today.  I layered it with a a small blanket scarf inspired by photos I’ve seen recently (I can’t remember where) and a belt.  My denim dress (seen here with the same belt) from Kohl’s is over a light heather grey long sleeved shirt.  I finished the look with black tights and suede over the knee boots (seen here, here, here and here), which are not warm at all but look so good with the outfit.

Alway Skinny Jeans, Destructured Jens, Faux Fur vest, Gap, Wool Cap Women's

Nothing fancy doesn’t have to mean boring.  You can still look cute with the same effort it takes to throw on a pair of sweats.  For me, layers make an outfit interesting.  Today I am just headed to the ice rink for T’s first hockey game…Go Sharks!.  The rink is always cold, so layers is the answer anyway you look at it.  Destructed jeans is a great start.  It’s just the rink after all, but you don’t have to look like a slob.  So jeans, but in a light wash and distressed gives a laid back, easy feeling.  Mine are Gap Always Skinny.  Simple black and grey on top.  Silver Grey Cami from Express (my Favs), a hi-lo sweatshirt that I just bought from Danskin Now (Walmart), faux fur vest (BJ’s, on clearance this past summer).  All topped off with a little color, J.Crew wool burgundy with silver embroidery cap (no longer available, but  am lovin’ this one at UO) and my Arturo Chiang boots (also seen here, similar here) and my find of the season, Land’s End Kids quilted coat (thrift store find).

Arturo Chiang, Brown Boots, Cropped Sweater, Lace Dress, Lands' End, Oversized Menswear, Plaid, Quilted Coat, White with off White

DSC02288

When thinking about what to wear today I was inspired by one of my favorite blogs Cupcakes and Cashmere.  I just tweaked it to fit my style.  Most of these pieces have been shown before.  The oversized meanswear shirt layered over my lace dress.  But this time I added the cropped sweater (see before here) and my well loved Arturo Chiang boots that I bought at L&T 4 years ago, but I still love them (similar here in Whiskey Tye Dye).  The picture looks white but the dress and sweater are cream color.  Only the Shirt is white. So there is a little contrast.  Can you see it here?

And then there is this coat.  What a find!  I have to tell someone about it.  It’s Lands’ End Kids.. Size XL/14  Found it for $14.99 at a thrift shop (maybe I shouldn’t tell people).  But I love the quilting, the plaid lining (another fall trend)  and the weight is perfect for fall and into winter.  What do you think?

P.S. Have you seen Lands’ End’s New Catalog?  I’m in love with the Stewart plaid.
