DIY Derby Hat, Navy Clutch, quilted clutch, Statement Necklace, Summer Tunic, Thrift Store Fashion, tunic over shorts

DSC00070DSC00073DSC00071DSC00088

Saturday was the Ketucky Derby and we were invited to a Derby Party — the whole family had a blast!  The invitation said hats required, like I need an excuse to wear a hat.:)

I whipped up one for me and one for G the morning of the party using a hat we already had and a Thrift Store find ($4.99), a wide ivory grosgrain ribbon that I found in my stash of ribbons, blush pink silk roses I bought at The Christmas Tree Store for $10.00 and a hot glue gun.

The outfit was inspired by OP.  I love the idea of layering a shorter dress or tunic with a pair of shorts that just peek out from underneath.  I bought the navy and ivory Paper Crane tunic, along with 3 other dresses (to be revealed soon) at Marshall’s.  Each was $19.99.  The navy shorts (you can barely see them, but they’re there) are J.Crew 4″ Chino Short.  I only go with 4″.  I don’t know why but they are the perfect length for me.  The belt and watch are from Target, the sandals are Nine West (TJ Maxx), the purse is a Thrift Store Find from last year (also seen here), necklace is from my ridiculous JCPenney jewelry buy last fall (also seen here).

This has been one of my favorite outfits this spring.  I bought the top at JC Penneys on clearance for $15.00.  It’s made by Alyx and they call it a bubble top because it has a loose elastic bottom which makes it poof perfectly.  The bell sleeves have lattice trim adding interest to an otherwise plain white top.  This top will get me from spring and through summer easily.  I see jean shorts and sandals. These jeans are GAP 1969 (also seen here and here) and quite old at this point — 3 years maybe (similar here).  The boots are Ivanka Trump (also seen here) and I have worn the heck out of them, and love that they go all the way to my knees.  The belt is the Thrift Store Find.  I can’t remember how much it cost, but if it was more than $5 I would be very surprised.  It is totally unique, which is why I browse thrift stores all the time.  Sunglasses are RayBan 55 mm Aviators gold matte with brown lenses.

Gap, Kohl's, Merona Skinny Patent belt, Over the Knee Suede Boots, Plaid Dress, Shirtdress, Steve Madden Bag, sweater dress, Target, TJMaxx, work outfit

DSC05358DSC05355DSC05354First this is an older photo — we do NOT have any snow on the ground. 🙂

So this idea came to me when I saw this outfit and I thought “I can pull this together with what I already have in my closet”–just a new twist on layering .  The plaid press is GAP last year (also seen here) and the sweater dress is probably at least 2 years old from Kohl’s, of course, on clearance (also seen here)  Boots are my over thee knee suede, belt is Merona from Target (also seen here and here) .  Bag is Steve Madden from TJ Maxx (inspired by this blogger and her coach bag from 2009).

The star of this outfit is the buffalo plaid jacket, without question.  It is a Thrift Store find.  I bought it for $12.99, a complete steal.  I love it and have worn it often this winter and now into the spring.  This day I wore it over a monochromatic combo of black and charcoal grey.  The faux leather leggings are from Target.   I wasn’t sure about them at first, but under a long tunic top — I they look great!  The sweater vest is sooo old.  A TJ Maxx find from long ago (also seen here) and the boots were my fave footwear purchase of last year (seen here and here) inspired by the one and only OP.  Hat and gloves are from my local supermarket–believe it or not.   Happy Friday!

Faux Fur vest, JCPenneys, Joe Fresh, Layered necklaces, Leather pants, mixed metal necklaces, Olivia Palermo, Sheer tunic, Snake skin Flats

DSC05186DSC05187DSC05191DSC05190DSC05189

This was my school Holiday Party outfit.  These coated leggings (also seen here) are so perfect for those days when the cookie tray got the best of you. 🙂 I folded the cuff under just once to make them just a tad shorter.  What do you think of my new flats??  I love them–snake skin (OP Inspired) with a navy suede trim and honestly so comfortable.  They are Sam Edelman (similar here).  I know I will wear them with everything!  The shirt was a JCPenney find, Joe Fresh (sad to say, I can’t find a link anywhere to buy).  I like the color and the length. I’ve bought a few things in this merlot color so it will blend into my wardrobe nicely and the tunic length makes it so versatile; tie front, full tuck, half tuck, no tuck.  They all work.  The faux fur vest (also seen here) is from BJ’s, of all places, I bought it over a year ago, maybe 2.  The necklace (looks like 3 but it’s all one) is also from Penny’s I got it for a steal at $7, regularly $24, back in October (along with this beauty for $3, reg. $30).

black loafers, casual outfit, Fall Outfit, J.Crew Striped Painter's tee, Loafers, Plaid Jacket, Trumpet Skirt

DSC00203DSC00208DSC00211DSC00219DSC00216

I’ve told you that I have many outfits to post, this is one from back in December.  This flirty skirt is a Target Clearance item.  What I love about it for me, is the flat smooth top of the skirt which emphasizes my smaller waist and the trumpet lower part that camouflages my less than impressive upper thighs.  The material is a casual almost sweatshirt fabric and I just thought it was cute.  I wore it with my fav navy striped shirt from J.Crew (seen here and here), black tights and loafers that are from my sales rep days when I walked on college campuses all day long and needed sensible shoes to make it bearable.  The truth is I like these loafers and feel like they have made a comeback.  The jacket is a thrift store find.  I think it’s adorable.  Cropped and plaid made it a great addition to my jacket collection (which is really quite large).  It’s Tommy Hilfiger and although I’m not sure what it cost me — I did find it in the kids section (but it’s not kids) so I can’t imagine it cost me more than $10. Just recently I saw these pictures (here and here) of OP and thought there was some inspiration there that I hadn’t even realized.

chambray shirt dress, Ivanka Trump, knee high boots, monogrammed, plaid wrap, suede boots, summer to fall transition

DSC05165DSC05169dsc05171[1]DSC05168

So there are a couple of things I like about this ensemble.  First — the plaid wrap.  I got it at Tuesday Morning for $20.  Then I had it monogrammed at a local place where I’ve done everything from towels to bags and backpacks.  Inspiration for the monogram is this Burberry blanket wrap from last year.  I bought the dress this last summer as a  bathing suit cover up.  I’ve been using shirt dresses for cover-ups for years.  I saw these pins (here and here) and it inspired me to dig it out.

The Boots.  I love the boots!  Again, like my post last week,  I needed new pairs that were taller than the ones I’ve had (I bought them when the kids were in pre-school, so I thought I was due for some new ones).  These are Ivanka Trump (Addee knee high suede) and I got them at Lord and Taylor.

The bag (TJ Maxx, also seen here), belt and watch (target also seen here) are old.

Always Skinny, Asos Oversized Blanket Scarf, boyfriend watch, Buffalo Check, C9, Gap, Jean Leggings, Nine West, roxie boot, sam edelman, Target, Walmart plaid

DSC05154 DSC05155 DSC05157 DSC05158 DSC05159

More from my new plaid collections of shirts.  This is the only Buffalo Check I have, but it’s in the classic red with charcoal grey.  This shirt is in tunic length from Walmart (another pattern seen here) and half tucked into my jean leggings from GAP, 1969 collection (seen here and here, similar here). The coat has become a staple for me (Target C9, last year, also seen here ) The blanket scarf was what I found after Land’s End ran out of the Stewart Plaid last winter (also seen here), but I actually like this one better and if you need this in your wardrobe, head to Bluebirds and Sunshine at the Galleria Mall.  I just saw it there in a darker hue.   The Boots?  …now the boots are brand new.  I have been on the hunt for riding boots that are tall like my Hunter boots (16 1/2 “).  In my experience here in Buffalo, the best place to buy boots is Lord and Taylor.  Not always the least expensive, but not run of the mill and you will love them for years.  This pair is awesome!  Black with bronze back panels and metallic heel embellishment give something unexpected to these riding boots.  Made by Sam Edelman, his Circus line, online at 6pm for $62.00.  Bag is Nine West, TJ Maxx (also seen here); Sunnies are from Tuesday Morning; Belt, old; Watch, Target (also seen here); necklace, gift (also seen here)

The weather we’ve been having the last few weeks has been perfect! Cool mornings giving way to warmer afternoons and plenty of sun!  Perfect for lightweight layers.  This latest dress is a wonderful addition to my closet.  I found it on clearance at Ann Taylor Loft for $25.  A summer to fall transition piece, sleeveless, fit and flare in an olive green camo-ish pattern.  Today I’m wearing it with my INC short sleeved sweater coat, also seen here (which I remember buying the year of my 20th High School Reunion– so a long time ago), a Relic belt (sold here in black) that I happened to get at JCPenneys immediately before I found the dress (meant to be), black tights, over the knee suede boots (Chinese Laundry— seen here and here).  The necklace is also from Penneys.  I found some great statement necklaces and earrings on clearance for insane prices… like $4 insane, I can’t remember what I got this one for but it is still for sale online.  The blanket scarf from American Eagle (last winter –also seen here) in the top and bottom pictures was for that morning 34 degree chill.
